Grandmothers

My beautiful wife of almost 45 years is an excellent grandmother. She loves it more than life itself. From the birth of our oldest granddaughter to our newest she loves all five of them with a love that is hard to describe. She's had her hands full since I had my stroke and things are not as easy as they were before. She's had to adjust to me taking an early retirement and not being a pastor's wife anymore. It's been very hard on her, but the one constant that keeps her going is the excitement of seeing the grandkids every week and being with them for a little while. She will bake cakes, cookies, or do whatever for those babies because that's what Grandmother's do.

I was fortunate to have a precious grandmother who did the same for me. Becky never got to really know her grandparents like I did, so what she's doing is on the fly. I believe that God just put a natural instinct into the heart of a grandmother to be what she should be for her grandkids, and if anybody fills that role it's my wife. She's the best grandmother I know.

It is with that in mind that I share these few thoughts about grandmothers. I'm sure many of you can see the application to the grandmother that you love. May this bring a little joy and a lot of appreciation to the tireless job you do for your grandchildren.

-Grandmothers are moms with lots of frosting.

-Grandmothers are just 'antique' little girls.

-A grandmother is a babysitter who watches the kids instead of the television.

-Becoming a grandmother is wonderful. One moment you're just a mother. The next you are all-wise and prehistoric.

-Grandmothers always make you feel she had been waiting to see just you all day and when she does the day was complete.

-Grandmothers never run out of hugs or cookies.

-Grandmothers hold our tiny hands for just a little while, but our hearts forever.

-It's such a grand thing to be a mother of a mother-that's why the world calls her grandmother.

-You do not really understand something unless you can explain it to your grandmother.

-Grandmother-grandchild relationships are simple. Grandmas are short on criticism and long on love.

-Grandmother-a wonderful mother with lots of practice.

-If your baby is 'beautiful and perfect, never cries or fusses, sleeps on schedule and burps on demand, an angel all the time,' you're the grandma.

If becoming a grandmother was only a matter of choice, I would advise every one of you mothers straight away to become one. There is no fun for old people like it!
