The Sweetest Revenge

Forgiveness truly is the sweetest revenge.

It can turn an enemy into a friend.

It can free a heart from the chains of anger, hatred, and pain.

It can open a soul to the sweetness of love and joy once again.

It can help you to live by the Golden Rule and to create a Golden Life.

It can bring you back to oneness with God in everything you think, feel, and do.

That is why I often pray, "God help me to forgive, help me to give, and help me to love."

May your life always be full of sweet forgiveness then.

Just Don't

I met a gentleman earlier this week who told me he was ready to retire. He's got a good job, but he deals with the public everyday. The reason he told me for his retirement was that he was tired of dealing with people. He said, "There has to be more to living than just dealing with complaining people."

I must agree.

Life has a complete set of traumas, tragedies, aggravations and frustrations with which we have to cope. People are usually involved in each of them and may even be the cause of the situation.

-We don’t choose them.

-We can’t control them.

-They just happen, like it or not.

The last thing we need to do to ourselves is to pile on a bunch of self-inflicted angst or let others do the same. The end result is defeat and despair.

So if you’re letting complaining people cause you additional distress and frustration in your life, just don't! Realize that the ones who complain the most have as much baggage if not more in their past as you do. Just don't sweat it-God will bring you through.

Life's Truths For Adults (Part1)

I think part of a best friend's job should be to immediately clear your computer history if you die.

There is nothing worse than that moment during an argument when you realize you're wrong.

I totally take back all those times I didn't want to nap when I was younger.

There is great need for a sarcasm font.

Really, how ARE you supposed to fold a fitted sheet?

Was learning cursive really necessary?

Map Quest really needs to start their directions on #5. I'm pretty sure I know how to get out of my neighborhood.

Obituaries would be a lot more interesting if they told you how the person died.

I can't remember the last time I wasn't at least kind of tired.

Bad decisions make good stories.

“Complete Forgiveness”

2 Peter 1:4 "Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust."

One of the reasons it is so hard to grasp the true forgiving power of Christ's shed blood is because it just seems too good to be true. God's Word is true, and it tells us that through Christ, we have exceedingly great and precious promises.

The word precious in my opening passage refers to the Greek word timios, which actually means valuable or costly. These promises that God has given us, cost Jesus everything. He paid a steep price for our redemption, healing and deliverance.

So it is absolutely essential for us to realize the forgiving power of the Blood of Jesus! Nothing we can do will ever add to or take away from the work that Christ did on the cross. As the song sings, "What can wash away my sins? Nothing but the Blood of Jesus!"

(1) If you have to do something to receive forgiveness of your sins, then you will always wonder if you've done enough.
Galatians 3:11, "But that no man is justified by the law in the sight of God, it is evident: for, the just shall live by faith."

Knowing that your conscience is clean is very important. A while back, the Holy Spirit spoke to me and said, "You need to know that you are clean before me-your faith depends upon it!"

a. The Blood of Jesus was shed to not only forgive, but to remove our sin.
-In the Old Testament, the priests would sacrifice lambs, goats, and other such things to cover the people's sins. However, this sacrifice was not significant enough to remove the stain of sin. But since Christ shed His blood, our sin can be removed from our account.

b. In Hebrews 10 the writer paints us a clearer picture.
Verses 14-18 “For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified. Whereof the Holy Ghost also is a witness to us: for after that he had said before, This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, saith the Lord, I will put my laws into their hearts, and in their minds will I write them; And their sins and iniquities will I remember no more. Now where remission of these is, there is no more offering for sin.”

c. Jesus Himself said in Matthew 26:28, "For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins."

The word remission here is referring to the Greek word aphesis which means:
"Forgiveness or pardon, of sins (letting them go as if they had never been committed), remission of the penalty."

d. John the Baptist also confirmed this when he saw Jesus coming to him in John 1:29 and said, “Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world."

(2) We always need to remember that forgiveness of our sins is a gift. We cannot deserve it or earn it in any way, but we must receive it as a gift.

Ephesians 2:8 "For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God."

-We are told that through faith in Christ Jesus, we can obtain forgiveness of our sins through the blood that He shed for us:

Galatians 2:16 "Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified."

John 3:15 "That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life."

Romans 3:28 "Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law."

Galatians 3:11 "But that no man is justified by the law in the sight of God, it is evident: for, the just shall live by faith."

Galatians 3:24, "Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith."

It is through faith in Christ Jesus that we are made right with God. The Bible even goes on to show that if we try to make ourselves righteous by our own works, then we are missing the whole point, and therefore we are not truly accepting the work that Christ did as significant.

In the NLT Galatians 5:1; 4 says, "So Christ has really set us free. Now make sure that you stay free, and don't get tied up again in slavery to the law... For if you are trying to make yourselves right with God by keeping the law, you have been cut off from Christ! You have fallen away from God's grace."

(3) Justified is another powerful word used in the Bible to describe the forgiveness of our sins and restoration of our relationship with God.
Romans 5:1 "Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ."

If we take the word justified in this verse, and look it up we are given the Greek word dikaioo, which means, "to render (that is, show or regard as) just or innocent: - free, justify (-ier), be righteous." When a person is justified, it makes them innocent just as if they have never sinned. This is the very reason that we can live a new life in Christ, because when we have repented of our sins, we are made right with God and have the righteousness of God upon us.

Romans 3:22 "Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe..."

This is the divine exchange.
a. Christ was punished for our sins, so that we can receive forgiveness.
b. He was given our shame so that we can receive His righteousness.

2 Corinthians 5:21 "For He hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him."

(4) Living the exchanged lifestyle.
Galatians 2:20 "I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me."

-After we repent (confess and turn from) our sins, and believe upon Jesus Christ and the work that He has done for us on the cross, our life is in Christ and we are identified with Him and His righteousness, thereby setting us free from guilt and condemnation.
Romans 8:1 "There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit."

-Romans 6:3-6 tells us that our old self was crucified with Christ and buried with Him, and we are raised to new life in Christ Jesus.

-When we are raised to new life we are also considered a new person; old things having passed away and all things became new.

2 Corinthians 5:17, "Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new."

The Greek word for repent used often in the NT is metanoeo, which means, "to think differently or afterwards, reconsider." To repent of a sin is not simply to confess it as sin, but to actually turn from it and change your mind about it.

-Just like the woman at the well.
John 8:11, "She said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said unto her, Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more."

-Just like the thieves in Ephesus.
Ephesians 4:28, "Let him that stole steal no more: but rather let him labor, working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have to give to him that needeth."

(5) We are entitled to a clean conscience.
Because of the costly work that Christ did for us on the cross, we can be forgiven of our sins, and the stain of guilt removed. So much so, that God's Word states clearly that we can enter the throne room with boldness because our sins are removed from our account!

Hebrews 10:2"...The worshipers once purged should have had no more conscience of sins...

19 “Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus...”

22 “Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water."

This means that because of the work that Jesus did for us on the cross, you and I are entitled to a guilt free conscience.

Colossians 1:21-23"And you, that were sometime alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now hath he reconciled. In the body of his flesh through death, to present you holy and unblameable and unreproveable in his sight: If ye continue in the faith grounded and settled, and be not moved away from the hope of the gospel, which ye have heard, and which was preached to every creature which is under heaven; whereof I Paul am made a minister…”

Old bodies don't always make for old hearts

It is such an amazing thing that we can grow younger on the inside while we grow older on the outside. Some of the most loving, joyous, and vital people I know live inside ancient bodies that have seen far better days. These people live from the soul. They love from the heart. They have an enthusiasm for life that is contagious. They smile often, laugh a lot, and take life one day at a time. On the inside they are far younger than I could ever hope to be. They remind me that old bodies don’t always make for old hearts.

I hope then that when your own birthday comes around that your heart will feel as young as ever. I hope that you will remember that you are not numbers on a calendar or candles on a cake. You are instead a being of light and a Child of God. You are an eternal, loving soul. You are a forever young spirit. Your body may age, weaken, and eventually die, but you never will. May you live all of your days with love, laughter, light, and joy.

Things you won't see in cards

"Congratulations on your wedding day! Too bad no one likes your wife."

"How could two people as beautiful as you have such an ugly baby?"

"I've always wanted to have someone to hold, someone to love. After having met you, I've changed my mind."

"Looking back over the years that we've been together, I can't help but wonder: What in the world was I thinking?"

"As you grow older, Mom, I think of all the gifts you've given me. Like the need for therapy..."

"Congratulations on your promotion. Before you go, would you like to take this knife out of my back. You'll probably need it again."

"Someday I hope to get married, but not to you."

"Happy Birthday! You look great for your age...Almost Lifelike!

"When we were together, you always said you'd die for me. Now that we've broken up, I think it's time you kept your promise."

"I knew the day would come when you would leave me for my best friend. So here's his leash, water bowl and chew toys."

"We have been friends for a very long time, whatdaya say we call it quits."

"You are such a good friend that if we were on a sinking ship and there was only one life jacket.... I'd miss you heaps and think of you often."

Does the Bible say that God won't put more on you than you can bear?

No it doesn't. Here's what it really says:

1 Corinthians 10:13 KJV "There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it."

NKJV "No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it."

NIB "No temptation[a] has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted[b] beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted,[c] he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it."

HCSB "No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to humanity. God is faithful, and He will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation He will also provide a way of escape so that you are able to bear it."

AMP "For no temptation (no trial regarded as enticing to sin), [no matter how it comes or where it leads] has overtaken you and laid hold on you that is not common to man [that is, no temptation or trial has come to you that is beyond human resistance and that is not [a]adjusted and [b]adapted and belonging to human experience, and such as man can bear]. But God is faithful [to His Word and to His compassionate nature], and He [can be trusted] not to let you be tempted and tried and assayed beyond your ability and strength of resistance and power to endure, but with the temptation He will [always] also provide the way out (the means of escape to [c]a landing place), that you may be capable and strong and powerful to bear up under it patiently.

The Message "No test or temptation that comes your way is beyond the course of what others have had to face. All you need to remember is that God will never let you down; he’ll never let you be pushed past your limit; he’ll always be there to help you come through it."

Dr Suess Computer Problems

If a packet hits a pocket on a socket on a port, And the bus is interrupted as a very last resort, And the address of the memory makes your DVD abort,
Then the socket packet pocket has an error to report!

If your cursor finds a menu item followed by a dash, And the double-clicking icon puts your window in the trash, And your data is corrupted 'cause the index doesn't hash,
Then your situation's hopeless, and your system's gonna crash!

If the label on the cable on the table at your house, Says the network is connected to the button on your mouse, But your packets want to tunnel on another protocol,
That's repeatedly rejected by the printer down the hall,

And your screen is all distorted by the side effects of gauss So your icons in the window are as wavy as a souse,
Then you may as well reboot and go out with a bang, 'Cause as sure as I'm a poet, the sucker's gonna hang!

When the copy of your CD's getting sloppy on the disc, And the microcode instructions cause unnecessary RISC,
Then you have to flash memory and you'll want to RAM your ROM. Quickly now, turn off the computer and go and tell your mom!

-Your dream becomes a reality in that moment and creates a memory without any ending. It perpetuates itself.

Such moments come rare in a lifetime
for they don't often happen by chance.
Just remember that sweet memories are glimpses of heaven that God gives us to ward off our fears.

So it really does pay to count your blessings.

Scientists have found that grateful people:

-Show higher levels of positive emotions, life satisfaction, vitality, and optimism.

-Experience lower levels of depression and stress.

-Have more capacity for compassion.

-Are rated as more generous and helpful by other people.

-Are more likely to have a spiritual practice.

-Place less importance on materialism.

-Are more likely to make progress towards important personal goals.

-Exercise more regularly, report fewer physical symptoms, and feel healthier.

So before you fall asleep, reflect on the day and identify 5 things you are grateful for.

A group of young adults who did a daily gratitude exercise, such as the one above, showed higher levels of positive states of alertness, enthusiasm, determination, attentiveness and energy compared to those participants who focussed on hassles or negative comparisons.

So it really does pay to count your blessings.

Three Actions of Faith

Luke 8:24, 25 “And they came to him, and awoke him, saying, Master, master, we perish. Then he arose, and rebuked the wind and the raging of the water: and they ceased, and there was a calm. And he said unto them, Where is your faith? And they being afraid wondered, saying one to another, What manner of man is this! For he commandeth even the winds and water, and they obey him.”

In this story we find the disciples with Jesus, in a boat, taking a trip to the other side of the Sea of Galilee. They might have expected this would be one of the most amazing trips they’d ever take, and it was; but not in the way they expected.

As they crossed the sea, a raging storm came upon them, out of nowhere. This storm brought these expert fishermen to the very end of themselves. They thought they were going to die. The disciples struggled to keep the boat from capsizing. They finally remember Jesus is on board and find Him sleeping on a cushion in the back of the boat. As a last ditch effort, they turn to Jesus in anger, crying out, “Teacher, don’t you care that we are going to drown?” Jesus awakens and rebukes the storm and there was instant calming. A word from Jesus was all it took. The disciple’s desperation ceased and they were left in awe and amazement.

Look with me just a moment at their situation:
-This storm came out of nowhere just like our storms do today.
-This storm was unexpected especially with Jesus on board their vessel.
-This storm was more powerful than anything they had previously experienced.
-This storm brought emotions to surface that these rugged men were not accustomed to.

Have you ever been in a situation like that? One where there seems to be no way out and nothing you can do to save yourself? That same desperation is what the disciples must have felt in this situation. Jesus is in the boat with you too as a believer, but it doesn’t make you immune to storms or the destruction they can bring.

Jesus was physically with them, but they waited until the last minute to ask Him for help. I’ve often wondered, “Shouldn’t it have it occurred to them, to ask Him for help, right away?” However, when you really think about it we do the same thing today. When we need our faith the most it is sometimes hard to be found.

We know that we need to trust Jesus, but practically, how do we do that when we’re being tossed about? Having faith in God truly means that we seek Him, enter into His rest, and trust in His Word. Our faith requires action even when we are in the midst of a storm.

(1) Our first action of faith is to trust Him with everything within us.
Matthew 11:28 “Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”

Jesus was very specific in telling those who were heavy-laden and overburdened to come to Him. So what does that really mean in the times we face today?
a. We can’t trust Him in some things and not in others. There’s no such thing as God being almost sovereign. He either is or isn’t!

b. If our situation requires a miracle, then we must realize that God is the only One that can perform that miracle.

c. We must learn how to go to Him in prayer, casting all our cares on Him, and receive His rest (peace).

d. We must stop laboring and trying to do it our way, and learn to start trusting Him to do it His way.

Jeremiah 32:27 “Behold, I am the Lord, the God of all flesh: is there anything too hard for me?”

(2) Our second action of faith is to learn how to rest in the midst of our storms.
In a violent, life-threatening storm, Jesus was peacefully asleep. In our storms of life, we too, can enter into rest with God.

a. Just stand still and watch God work.
1 Chronicles 20:17 “Ye shall not need to fight in this battle: set yourselves, stand ye still, and see the salvation of the Lord with you, O Judah and Jerusalem: fear not, nor be dismayed; tomorrow go out against them: for the Lord will be with you.”

b. Continuing to trust Him, even if our situation does not change.
Jeremiah 29:11 “For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.”

-We can’t change our circumstances if the circumstances we are in are God’s will.
-We must trust that He has promised to work all things for good.

c. We must expect what God speaks in the storm to come to pass in our lives.
Isaiah 55:11 “So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.”

(3) Our third action of faith is to have the foundation of the Word.
You can’t be an unbelieving believer. You either trust God or you don’t. You trust His Word or you don’t.
Psalm 22:5 “They cried unto thee, and were delivered: they trusted in thee, and were not confounded.”

a. Faith does not walk by sight, because every time you step out in faith, you can rest assured, you are going to be challenged with something that contradicts it.

b. Faith is a choice, not a feeling. It is choice that declares, regardless of the way things appear, “I trust God.”

In closing remember these three things:
-Jesus will never jump out of the boat of your life.
-Don’t wait until the storms hit you before you know His Word.
-Keep your shield of faith handy. You never know when you might need it.

Falling off the bridge

Most of us go through life determinedly saying, "I can do it myself!" There always comes a time, though, when life gives us too much to carry. There comes a time when we all start to stagger and fall. Wouldn’t it be better if before then we wisely asked our Heavenly Father for His help? It would be a lot safer, a lot easier and we would be a lot happier too.

Don’t wait until you are about to fall off the bridge of life before you ask God to help you. Do so today, right now. Ask God to help you with your problems, struggles, and difficulties. Ask your Heavenly Father to help you to do your work and live your life the best you can. Ask Him to help you to do His will and share His love. Life doesn’t have to rest on your shoulders alone. Your loving Father is always ready to help you carry your bags. His hand is there to steady you, His smile is there to shine on you, and His love is there to uplift you. All you have to do is ask.

“Dealing With Guilt”

Ecclesiastes 3:14, 15 “I know that, whatsoever God doeth, it shall be forever: nothing can be put to it, nor any thing taken from it: and God doeth it, that men should fear before him. That which hath been is now; and that which is to be hath already been; and God requireth that which is past.”

Perhaps one of the biggest reasons so many of God's children are living defeated lives, is because of guilt. Guilt is one of Satan's biggest weapons against us. It tears us down, it makes us feel dirty, unworthy, robs of us of our faith and confidence in Christ Jesus. Jesus not only came to cleanse us from our sins, but also to set us free from the guilt of our sins. If you want to live a life of spiritual victory, you need to have a conscience freed from the guilt of your past.

(1) There are two kinds of guilt mentioned in the Word of God.

-First, there's Godly sorrow that leads a person to repentance according to 2 Corinthians 7:10:
“For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death.”

This is known as conviction and it comes from the Holy Spirit according to John 16:8:
“And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment…”

Once a person repents, the guilt lifts and they feel relieved and joyful that their sin(s) have been forgiven.

-Secondly, there's another kind of guilt, and that's condemnation or accusations from the devil. Satan loves to torment God's people by reminding them of their past and continually holding their sins before them even after their sins have been forgiven. This is condemnation and there is no good that comes out of it whatsoever. It tears us down, makes us feel dirty, unworthy and robs of us of our faith and confidence in Christ Jesus. It's a lie from the father of lies, and it needs to be ignored.

What’s the difference between conviction and condemnation? Conviction shows you the answer, which is the blood of Jesus that washes away sin, while condemnation shows you the problem, which is your sin, your past and your failures.

-Condemnation comes from Satan and is meant to tear you down.

-Condemnation continually points out what a failure you are, and how badly you've messed up.
-Condemnation is showing you the problem, but avoiding the solution.

You must remember:
-Jesus did not come to condemn the world-John 3:17 “For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.”

-There is no condemnation in Christ Jesus-Romans 8:1 “There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.”

-Satan is known for accusing the brethren-Revelation 12:10 “And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night.”

(2) Guilt is a door to the enemy.
Matthew 18:34, 35 “And his lord was wroth, and delivered him to the tormentors, till he should pay all that was due unto him. So likewise shall my heavenly Father do also unto you, if ye from your hearts forgive not every one his brother their trespasses.”
I have seen how guilt can be an open door that allows a person to be tormented by evil spirits. False guilt is actually a symptom of un-forgiveness in your heart that is directed at yourself. In the Parable of the Unjust Servant (Matthew 18:23-35) Jesus tells us how important it is to forgive those who have wronged us, and how we can be turned over to the tormenters (evil spirits) if we are unforgiving.

Colossians 3:13 says, “Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye.”

The phrase 'one another' in NT Greek translates to a word that means everyone including themselves. Bitterness, regardless who or what it's about defiles a man according to Hebrews 12:15:
“Looking diligently lest any man fail of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled…”

Spiritual defilement is what makes a person’s life open to unclean spirits. It is very possible for a person to be harassed by evil spirits just because a person has refused to forgive them self.

(3) How guilt is cultivated and nurtured.
1 John 3:20, 21 “For if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things. Beloved, if our heart condemn us not, then have we confidence toward God.”

Guilt is cultivated when you continually allow yourself to dwell and think about how badly you've messed up, your pasts, the sins you've committed, etc. The enemy loves to remind us of our past failures, so he can keep us thinking about them. The problem is if we allow ourselves to fall for this trap, it allows the enemy to build what they call a stronghold in our minds.

We have to learn this trick of the enemy and stop Satan dead in his tracks. Learn the difference between condemnation and conviction, and stop listening to condemnation. Condemnation comes from the devil, and it's meant to build strongholds in your mind and weaken you spiritually.

(4) Breaking the stronghold of guilt.

Isaiah 54:17 “No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper; and every tongue that shall rise against thee in judgment thou shalt condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the LORD, and their righteousness is of me, saith the LORD.”

When a person who has repented of their sin(s) but continually feels guilty day after day, even after being told that their past has been washed away and their sins have been forgiven, is facing what we call a stronghold. A stronghold is a lie that is believed, which results in an incorrect thinking pattern. The stronghold of guilt is often not alone. It is usually accompanied with an incorrect perception of themselves or an incorrect perception of God, which are both strongholds in themselves.

People who have a stronghold of guilt rarely see God for who He really is or they don't see themselves correctly. Even though they are new creations in Christ who's past has been washed away according to 2 Corinthians 5:17 they simply don't believe it because they have a stronghold in their mind that needs to be torn down.

How do you break the stronghold of guilt?
Philippians 3:13, 14 “Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.”
a. You must understand the nature of God's forgiveness towards you.

b. You must see the key to being forgiven is repentance.

c. You must stop thinking about your past sins and start thinking about the new person you are in Christ. We are never told to mull around our past sins, but rather to forget the things which are behind and press forward.

d. You must forgive yourself as you forgive others.

Famous Last Words

"Are you sure the power is off?"

"Don't be so superstitious."

"He's probably just hibernating."

"I can do that with my eyes closed."

"I wonder where the mother bear is?"

"I'll get a world record for this."

"I'll hold it and you light the fuse."

"And that one over there, the red flashing one, what does that mean?"

"I'm making a citizen's arrest."

"It's fireproof."

"It's strong enough for both of us."

"I've done this before."

"I've seen this done on TV."

"Let it down slowly."

"Nice doggie."

"Now watch this..."

"Pull the pin and count to what?"

"Rat poison only kills rats."

"So, you're a cannibal..."

"Listen, I'm taking a course in chemistry, I know what I'm doing."

"That's odd..."

"These are the good kind of mushrooms."

"This doesn't taste right."

"What does this button do?"

"Which wire was I supposed to cut?"

National Courtesy Month

September is National Courtesy Month. The world in which we live can be dark and dreary, but courtesy and kindness does bring a pleasant, refreshing light to our lives whether we are the giver, the receiver or just an interested bystander.

When's the last time you saw:
-A teenager stand to give an elderly man her seat on a crowded bus?

-A motorist slow to allow another vehicle to merge onto the freeway smoothly and safely?

-A shopper with a week’s worth of groceries in his cart allowing someone with only a few items to go ahead of him in the check out line?

Such simple courtesies don’t necessarily change our lives, but they can certainly change the way we feel about them. Take the time to do unto others as you would have them do unto you. It will prove itself in the end.

911-Things will never be the same

Eleven years ago today I was sitting in my recliner in Union, SC stunned by the images I saw on television. I can only imagine what the folks at Pearl Harbor must have felt when they were attacked by Japanese aircraft seemingly from nowhere. The attacks on the Twin Towers and the Pentagon were things I never thought I would see happen on American soil. It is still unbelievable today to even think about it.

It has changed us in ways we will never understand directly and indirectly:

-It's changed the way we think about our security as a nation. If you don't believe me you haven't taken a flight lately or gone to a major event. We don't even trust our own selves anymore.

-It's changed our financial structure. We have never recovered fully from the attack financially. This affected our daily business operations, our insurance industry, the transportation industry, and even the hospitality industry has never fully recovered.

-It's exposed a vulnerability about our nation that we never anticipated. We saw a savagery about our civilization that still chills me to the core when I think about it. The sights of people running for their lives and jumping out of 100 plus floor buildings all because of a zealot's belief shows how little life means to some people.

Some children never saw their parents again and some parents never saw their babies again. They never got to hold one another and and say, "I love you." They never got to see each other grow old, start families, or enjoy life with one another. In just a few moments their whole world came crashing down and life stood still.

So even though things may never be the same after that fateful day, one thing is for certain. You who survived are in my prayers. Not just in my prayers, but I believe in the thoughts and prayers of all Americans today. To the family members of the victims just be assured someone is lifting you up in prayer daily. Things may never be the same, but God can help heal the hurts when no one else can.

We will never forget!

The Skunk and the Preacher

What a way to start a Monday. A writer friend of mine shared this story with me about his grandfather:

My grandfather was sort of a mentor for young preachers from a nearby seminary that came to area churches to hone their pulpit skills when area pastors were on vacation or taking leave due to illness.

My grandfather had taken a new preacher to a little country church for services. It was summer and the church had no air conditioning so all of the doors and windows were open. Everything was going fine and the young preacher was doing well until in walked a skunk. The skunk paraded right down the aisle towards the pulpit. The young preacher noticed the skunk. He cautiously looked around the church for reactions from the congregation.

To his surprise no one else seemed to even notice the skunk. Uneasily the preacher decided to ignore the skunk and keep preaching. The skunk kept on moving toward the front of the church. The preacher managed to continue focused on preaching until the skunk reached the platform and headed for the pulpit. The young preacher scanned the audience for some sort of reaction. Surely, he thought, someone in the congregation had noticed the skunk.

The audience appeared attentive but yet oblivious to the dilemma of the young preacher. The skunk moved closer to the preacher. Finally, the time for action had arrived and the preacher decided he had to do something. He vaulted over the pulpit and ran out the back door.

Once outside he took a few moments to catch his breath as he waited for others to follow. Several minutes passed and no one else came out of the church. He decided to check out the situation. Cautiously he approached the door and peaked inside. What he saw amazed him, the congregation was still seated as if nothing had happened.

Finally, one of the deacons walked out of the church holding the skunk. By this time the young preacher was extremely nervous and very confused. The deacon looked at the preacher holding up the skunk and said, "I guess we should have told you about the neighbor's pet skunk. He occasionally comes to vist."

Life's Daily Doses

Life is measured in daily doses
of trials and pleasures each.
Day by day grace is dispensed
to meet our immediate needs.

Comfort comes to the troubled
we find that which we seek.
A bridge is built at the river
and power comes to the weak.

One day's load we have to bear
as we travel on life's way.
Wisdom is given for the occasion
and strength to equal each day.

We are never required to stagger
under tomorrow's heavy load.
We journey one day at a time
as we tread life's winding road.

God's mercy is new each day
and His faithfulness is sure.
God directs our every step
and by our faith we endure.

I was watching Jimmy Swaggart yesterday in a crusade from the old Charlotte Coliseum that took place in April 1985. I was sitting on stage with other pastors who helped sponsor the crusade. 27 years ago he preached on the compromise of Pentecost before the coming of the Lord. He also spoke about the rapture and being ready for the judgment. The altar was full of people seeking God when he have the invitation.

I have seen several of his sermon points come to pass in the last 27 years. These are just a few of the things he said:

-Many have grown cold in their relationship and commitment to God.

-We are still fighting over what kind of music we ought to sing in church.

-People have grown disrespectful of the pastor and the ministries of the local.

I could go on about even more that he preached. The thing that amazes me most is just how merciful God is to give us opportunities to repent. 27 years ago the message was repent and it's still the message today. The only difference between then and now is that people received and responded to it back then more than now.

I don't think the Lord is going to wait another 27 years. The Bible tells us to seek the Lord while He may be found and to call upon Him while He is near. So if you don't know Jesus repent today. You will find out it's worth it in the end.

Peace

A specific truth of life is that there is much we cannot change. We can't do anything about this morning's traffic. Another person's reaction is not something we can control or dictate. As much as we desire people to be like us we don't usually see that happen and there's really nothing we can do about it.

I'm sure that we all have made a number of mistakes that we probably regret, but they are in the past and that is something we cannot change. Reliving the past does not help us change the future or help us make today any easier. That's why regardless of what takes place we need to learn how to be at peace.

There's a certain power in calmness. And those who learn to accept with peace that which they cannot change will find power to change those things they can. Inner peace gives you the ability to see what can be done and also what can't. This peace is available to all who ask.

Philippians 4:7
"And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus."

37 Seconds

It will take just 37 seconds to read this and change your thinking.

Two men, both seriously ill, occupied the same hospital room. One man was allowed to sit up in his bed for an hour each afternoon to help drain the fluid from his lungs. His bed was next to the room's only window. The other man had to spend all his time flat on his back.

The men talked for hours on end. They spoke of their wives and families, their homes, their jobs, their involvement in the military service, where they had been on vacation.

Every afternoon, when the man in the bed by the window could sit up, he would pass the time by describing to his roommate all the things he could see outside the window. The man in the other bed began to live for those one hour periods where his world would be broadened and enlivened by all the activity and color of the world outside.

The window overlooked a park with a lovely lake. Ducks and swans played on the water while children sailed their model boats. Young lovers walked arm in arm amidst flowers of every color and a fine view of the city skyline could be seen in the distance.

As the man by the window described all this in exquisite details, the man on the other side of the room would close his eyes and imagine this picturesque scene.

One warm afternoon, the man by the window described a parade passing by. Although the other man could not hear the band - he could see it in his mind's eye as the gentleman by the window portrayed it with descriptive words.

Days, weeks and months passed. One morning, the day nurse arrived to bring water for their baths only to find the lifeless body of the man by the window, who had died peacefully in his sleep. She was saddened and called the hospital attendants to take the body away.

As soon as it seemed appropriate, the other man asked if he could be moved next to the window. The nurse was happy to make the switch, and after making sure he was comfortable, she left him alone.

Slowly, painfully, he propped himself up on one elbow to take his first look at the real world outside. He strained to slowly turn to look out the window besides the bed. It faced a blank wall.

The man asked the nurse what could have compelled his deceased roommate who had described such wonderful things outside this window. The nurse responded that the man was blind and could not even see the wall.  She said, 'Perhaps he just wanted to encourage you.'

There is tremendous happiness in making others happy, despite our own situations. Shared grief is half the sorrow, but happiness when shared, is doubled.

If you want to feel rich, just count all the things you have that money can't buy. Today is a gift, that is why it is called The Present.

See, you didn't waste those 37 seconds reading this-you just might have a brighter perspective for the rest of your day.

If I Were Lost Would You Look For Me?

Bob Perks shares this story in his book, "I Wish You Enough". I want to share with you today.

If I were lost would you look for me? If cried would you care enough to ask why? If I were empty would you fill me up again? If I were stolen would you report me missing?

Foolish questions? Perhaps.

They were brought to my attention this morning when my phone rang and I heard the sweet voice of a young lady.

"Are your dogs missing?" she asked.

I realized it was my neighbor. My heart began pounding as I hurried through the house taking inventory.

I sighed and replied, "No, they are all accounted for."

She is a sweet soul. A kind, generous girl with an old fashioned heart and spirit. She bakes cookies and shares them with neighbors. She waves as she leaves her home and sees you working in the yard. Today she found two small dogs walking down the street. She took them in.

"They are well behaved and get along nicely with our own dog," she said.

I suggested places for her to report finding them.

"Most people wouldn't get involved," I said. "I wonder how many cars passed them by this morning and thought nothing of stopping. You did the right thing."

I went outside to watch for anyone who might be patrolling the area and I listened to hear the distant cry of someone calling their names.

Nothing.

Then the thought came to me. "What does it take for someone to go out of their way like she did?"

If I was lost I would hope someone would come looking.

If I were crying, alone and longing for a kind, gentle touch, I would hope that someone would stop and speak to me.

If I were empty, running on nothing but the little energy I had left from a battle going on within myself, I would wish that someone would fill the void with the words of kindness, caring and concern.

If I were stolen away by fear and confusion...if I were taken off to a place where darkness reigns and self pity blinded reality...I would pray that I'd be missed and rescued.

So, ask yourself that question today. Would you? Would you take in the dogs? Would you look for a lost friend or even a stranger?

Would you offer a kind word?

Would you search long enough to find someone you love who was stolen away by fear and doubt?

What good is faith without action?

When God proves He has a sense of humor

I read this story the other day about a gentleman whose name was Tom. Tom always dreaded the thought of old age. He said he couldn't imagine anything worse than being old. He would often write, "How awful it must be to have nothing to do all day long but stare at the walls or watch TV! That's just not the way I want my lfe to end up!"

Just recently Tom decided he would call on his new neighbor, an elderly retired gentleman, recently widowed, and who, he presumed, had moved in with his married daughter because he was too old to take care of himself. He went and bought a box of doughnuts and without bothering to call (some old people cannot hear the phone), headed next door to brighten this old guy's day and to let him know that his church had special ministries for the elderly.

When he rang the doorbell this "old guy" came to the door dressed in tennis shorts and a polo shirt, looking about as ancient and decrepit as Donny Osmond. "I'm sorry I can't invite you in," he said to Tom when he introduced myself, "but I'm due at the Racquet Club at two. I'm playing in the semifinals today."

"Oh that's all right," Tom said. "I brought you some doughnuts..."

"Great!" he interrupted, snatching the box. "Just what I need for bridge club tomorrow! Thanks so much!"

Tom continued, "...and just thought we'd visit a while. But that's okay! I'll just trot across the street and call on Granny Grady. She attends my church"

"Don't bother," he said. "Gran's not home; I know. I just called to remind her of our date to go dancing tonight. She may be at the beauty shop. She mentioned at breakfast (at which house?) that she had an appointment for a tint job."

So Tom went home and called his Mother's cousin (age 83) and she was in the hospital working in the gift shop. He called his aunt (age 74) and she was on vacation in China. He called his great uncle (age 79) and then remembered he was on his honeymoon.

He wrote in his story, "I still dread old age, now more than ever. I just don't think I can keep up with it!"

Life Is Good

Well, I did it. I made it to 59. That's two years past my dad and I'm still kicking. My health is the best it's been in years. I weighed at the gym this morning and down to 202. I've got about 20 more to reach my goal. Life is good.

The past nine years have been rough physically due to the accidents I had in 2003 and 2005, but feeling great today.
God has blessed me with the best wife in the world, a son and daughter-in-law that would make any man proud, and Hannah, Gracie, and Hayden, the loves of my life. As I said, I'm a blessed man.

So I will enjoy today and thank the Lord for His blessings. It don't get much better than this! LOL!
